What a Jungle Safari in Rajaji Is Really Like

Rajaji Tiger Reserve covers roughly 820 sq km of Shivalik foothills, and the Ganga cuts through it. The forest changes quickly as you drive: tall sal woods, open grassy flats, and wide stony river beds that fill with water after rain. Most visitors come for the elephants, but the park also holds leopards, tigers, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer and wild boar.

Your jeep follows a fixed track and a guide rides along. Morning drives are cool and quiet, with the best light for photos. Afternoon drives are warmer and slower, and in summer they are good for watching animals at the water. Nobody can promise a particular animal, which is part of the charm. What you can count on is a peaceful drive, fresh air and a very good chance of seeing elephants, deer and plenty of birds.

Rajaji Jungle Safari Zones Compared

Every zone feels a little different. If this is your first Rajaji National Park jeep safari, start with Chilla. If you have been before, try a quieter zone.
